Volcano in the Sand

Taking the classic volcano science experiment outdoors when it’s a nice and sunny day!

 What you will need:

  • A sandbox (check your neighbourhood parks if you don’t have one!)
  • Standard sized water bottle (500mL)
  • 5 teaspoons of baking soda
  • 1 cup of white vinegar
  • Dishwashing soap
  • Food colouring (choose your favourite colour!)

What you will do:

  • Ensure that your 500mL water bottle is a third of the way full with water
  • Make sure to keep cap
  • Place water bottle in the sand – ensure it is sturdy
  • Add the food colouring (this is the colour you will see explode from your volcano!)
  • Add one or two drops of dishwashing soap
  • Next, add your baking soda
  • Cap your water bottle
  • Make a mountain around the water bottle using more sand
  • You can get creative, you can make an intricate sand castle instead
  • Ensure that you can still access the cap and the neck of the bottle
  • Uncap the water bottle
  • Pour in your cup of white vinegar
  • Stand back, and watch your sand volcano erupt!

The great thing about this experiment is that you can try out different amounts of ingredients to see which combination gets you the highest volcano! Stick a ruler on the side of the volcano to see how high the explosions go!

Although the process gets messy, the clean up is super simple.

Remember to have fun, stay curious, and ask questions!
