Women in IT

“What excited me about the Engineering field is that it involves learning new things every day... I can never imagine myself sitting in an office and doing the same thing over and over, luckily having this career allows me to always experience a new challenge.”
Rozita's biography

I immigrated to Canada 27 years ago with a lot of ambition and the dream of furthering my studies in university. Unfortunately, as an international student I couldn’t enter any programs unless I passed the TOEFL exam, which is an English proficiency test. At that time, I lived in Montreal and I didn’t speak much English or know any French, so it was very hard for me to find a job. But I didn’t let that stop me, I studied really hard and I managed to pass the TOEFL exam with a high ranking. This was my first big accomplishment and I was extremely excited to start applying to universities. During this challenging time, I met my husband who had the exact same goal as me. I got accepted into the Electrical Engineering program at Concordia University in the fall of 1990 and I also got married that same year. Throughout my years in university, I maintained very good marks and was always on the honor’s list. When I got my bachelor’s degree, I was offered a position at Newbridge Networks (currently known as Alcatel) and so we moved to Ottawa.

I currently work at DragonWave Inc. and I love what I do. My job as a software Engineer involves: high level design, detail design, implementation (programming in C, C++, HTML and Javascript languages) and finally unit testing the features.

What excited me about the Engineering field is that it involves learning new things every day and it’s always challenging as you need to come up with new ideas, designs and solving problems. I never get bored at what I do and love to learn new things. I can never imagine myself sitting in an office and doing the same thing over and over, luckily having this career allows me to always experience a new challenge.

My advice to young women is that if you are strong in Math and Sciences and love to challenge yourself, consider going into the Engineering field. I had to put in extra efforts to complete my Engineering program because of the many challenges I had in my life: a new culture to understand, a new language to learn and added family responsibilities, but despite all that, I did do it and you can too. I am so grateful for having had the opportunity to follow my dreams and I encourage you to do the same. You never know what you are capable of, until you try. Give Engineering a try.
