Women in IT

“Push yourself, persevere and get out of your comfort zone: Better to be a small fish in a big bowl, even if sometimes the bowl feels like an ocean.”
Emilie's biography

As I was not ready to choose a career path right after high school, I decided to join a student exchange program in Germany. During those ten months, not only did I learn English and German, but this journey also taught me humility, perseverance, diligence and the importance of hard work. It was a life changing experience.

I really enjoyed studying mathematics, so I briefly studied Actuarial Science at Laval University. And I quickly found out it wasn’t for me. So, I decided to apply to Computer Science at the University of Ottawa. And that was it: I fell in love with programming and in 2007, I graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science!

After considering a Master’s Degree in bioinformatics, I decided to start my software development career at Cognos. I was initially hired to work on internal tools, but during my six years there I had the chance to work on broad span of projects, and on many different platforms. My work converged towards data access and data visualization.

In June of 2013, I had the opportunity to join a youthful, spirited and very dynamic company: Shopify. I truly believe that getting out of my comfort zone is the best way to stimulate personal and professional growth, and so I joined this extraordinarily talented team.

I am a software developer at Shopify. I work on the core product, more precisely on the financial operations team. I squash bugs and engage in some architecture work. I work with Shopify‘s Ruby on Rails codebase.

I think having the liberty to be creative — but in a very logical way — is what I appreciate the most about what I do. And because technologies in our field are evolving so fast, we’re engaged in a constant challenge to keep up with the latest and greatest in tech. And I like that.

When I was studying Actuarial Science I had to take a programming class, where we had to build a financial calculator. And this became my favourite class. I got hooked when I started my Computer Science degree at the University of Ottawa.

Don’t tie yourself to what you think you want. Explore. Eventually, you’ll identify what you’re truly passionate about, because you won’t be afraid to step onto new paths. I was 23 when I wrote my first computer program and I really wish I had done it sooner. Push yourself, persevere and get out of your comfort zone: Better to be a small fish in a big bowl, even if sometimes the bowl feels like an ocean.

I like to run and I also enjoy yoga. Sometimes, I try to play the piano, which is relaxing for me, but probably not anyone around me.

Through outreach and professional development activities, research, partnerships, thought leadership and online initiatives, we work with industry and academia to educate on the value of diversity for innovation, to inspire women to thrive and to celebrate the contributions of women in science and engineering.
