Magic Mud

What you’ll learn: This activity is a great way to teach your child about states of matter and the differences between solids and liquids

What you’ll need:

  • 5 tbsp of cornstarchmagic mud
  • 3 tbsp of water
  • Food colouring
  • A bowl

What to do:

  • Add food colouring to 3 tbsp of water.
  • In a bowl, combine coloured water with the cornstarch.
  • Play with your new magic mud! Try squeezing it in your palm.

After you’ve played with the magic mud:

  • Discuss what magic mud is. Is it a liquid or a solid?
  • Introduce the concept of a “suspension” (a suspension is both a liquid and a solid – when you squeeze your hand, a little bit of the water runs out of the mud so it becomes drier, but when you open your hand the water runs back in and it becomes runnier)

Through outreach and professional development activities, research, partnerships, thought leadership and online initiatives, we work with industry and academia to educate on the value of diversity for innovation, to inspire women to thrive and to celebrate the contributions of women in science and engineering.
