Shaima Abid

#iAmBiomed because technology should be used to improve patients’ quality of life.
Shaima's Biography

With degrees in Biochemistry and Biomedical Engineering (from University of Toronto and Ryerson University, respectively), I have held various roles in the healthcare, medical device and pharmaceutical industries, including researcher, engineer, and project manager. My career goal is to utilize my knowledge and skills to deliver disruptive treatment and technology that fulfill unmet medical needs and to provide better access to treatment for those in need.

In my current role as Project Manager at Takeda Canada Inc., I facilitate, track, and drive cross-functional activities so that all departments can work together to deliver innovative drug therapies to patients who need it.

My favourite part of the job is collaborating with cross-functional teams to brainstorm and implement ideas on how we can more effectively provide access to treatment for all patients.

My degrees in science and engineering have given me the ability to critically analyze all possible solutions to a problem to ascertain the optimal one, which is an invaluable skill to have as an engineer and a project manager. My academic background also allows me to better understand the technology and treatments that I work with, which is essential when working in the medical device and pharmaceutical industries.

Through outreach and professional development activities, research, partnerships, thought leadership and online initiatives, we work with industry and academia to educate on the value of diversity for innovation, to inspire women to thrive and to celebrate the contributions of women in science and engineering.
